I'm a new mac and logic user so eh... help please ....ta
oh yeah ..

Machine Model:Power Mac G4

Number Of CPUs: 2
CPU Speed: 500 MHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 1 MB
Memory: 512 MB
Bus Speed: 100 MHz
Boot ROM Version: 4.28f1

maybe I should mention that when I load this song I get a 'creating overview for ...." each audio track ,this is the small progress bar window on the top left cornor of my arrange window, followed by a

Your CPU isn't too slow, it's your harddrive. Try getting a second hard drive so all the recording can happen on one disk that's different than the disk that the software is being run from. You'll be much happier with the performance and the extra room.

In the hardware driver preference, turn the overload alert off. The message itself stops playback.

To add to the original post: If I get overloads, but the 'Disk I/O' meter (system performance) has plenty of room to move, is a quicker HD going to make a difference? It's the 'Audio' meter that maxes out for me when I get the overload message...

In short, no. In you case the amount of processing your CPU is having to do is causing it to MAX out, which has nothing to do with the HD stream which correctly reflects that it is not being taxed as much.

You have 2 options:

1. Purchase a more powerfull machine
2. Utilise more off-line processing, for example if your app is a sequencer like logic pro then freeze more of your tracks.

Thanks for that Beya, it's a very important bit of info, as I am not entirely sure of the difference between the performance meters and their implications. It has also potentially saved me shelling out on a Lacie HD etc.

I have just bought additional RAM, bringing it up to 1.5G's for my Pb. I get Overload messages when using:

1x Ultrabeat
2x GAP
1x BassAmp
1x SpaceDesigner
and only a total of 4 audio regions in the arrange...

My machine is Powrbook 17' 1Ghz 60G HD (of which 23G's are available)

Does it sound normal for the above system to you?
Thanks for your contribution.

That's actually quite a number of heavy-duty plug-ins. If it's all happening at once, your computer will be working very hard indeed.

tangawizi,

this is your problem. The plugins you are using, and at the same time, are very heavy going. Although memory will aid to a limit what is required is more processing power. No short straws here i'm affraid.

The meter on the left will indicate CPU usage, while th one on th right indicates disk usage I think, can't be too sure as I've been using nuendo for a while now. Any, this is where the PC guys have been moving ahead in leaps and bounds with their dual dual core opterons and athlon X2 CPUs. The following site gives greater indication of what I mean:

http://www.adkproaudio.com/benchmarks.cfm

With the machine you have I would advise that you freeze the instrument tracks and see how things go from there.

regards
