I have been very interested in getting involved in the world of mixing and sound editing. However I have no experience whatsoever with any instruments or software of any kind. What is the best way of getting started in this area? I currently have a 800 G3 iBook with Garageband. I didn't want to get into any more expensive equipment until I was sure I enjoyed creating the music. Also if I do become interested in this area, what would be the best setup to work from? I'm considering a G5 dual 2Ghz if needed. What are your thoughts and ideas about this?

The dual G5 is an excellent platform to work from if want to do music.

As for Audio interfaces - DAW:S/Sequencers - etc there are lots and lots to choose from. One of the best and cheapest DAW:s out there are Metro from Sagantech.
My own setup (down in the signature - is about 3500 grand) mixed new and second hand gear. (excluding the iMac)

You can check some of it out at Motu:s website to decide if thats somthing for you.
Many vendors like Motu, M-Audio, Yamaha and others make both Audio-interfaces and Midi-interfaces.

Yamaha have a new digital mixer "01X" with -
preamps 24/96 Bit/KHz resolution--> mLan/fw-interface -->
midi in out --> motorized faders --> can controll all major DAW:s -->
two inbuilt 32Bit effects. (etc)

If you plan to use external modules and/or synthesizers for sound or midi generation you may have need of an external mixer anyhow.

It is bit difficult to help you out since your question is rather general in nature. Hope I have given you some ideas.
