I'm about to purchase a new Mac Computer and Edirol MIDI Controller, in a basic attempt to start putting together a small home studo.

I wanted to work with a Music Production s/w setup that would best help me learn and succeed in that arena. Between Logic and the Pro Tools, which would you recommend and why?

Are there any other s/w that you would recommend instead or in addition to?

I think it really depends on what your needs are. Logic is extremely popular with those who are primarily MIDI-oriented. I'm a guitarist and work mostly with audio recording and editing, and have been happy with Pro Tools LE and an MBox. I believe that Pro Tools is still considered the best package for audio editing, and I've read claims that people have effectively done some extensive MIDI work in the Pro Tools environment, as well..

However, you mention a MIDI Controller and don't ask about audio interfaces, so maybe you're more of a MIDI guy. If that's the case, my instinct is that Logic Gold or Logic Platinum would be the package for you (though others would swear by Cubase SX or Digital Performer - it gets a little religious at times).

But I'm not really a MIDI guy, so take my comments with a grain of salt, and hopefully you'll get some other feedback if that's your thing. It might help to clarify what it is you'd like to do and what your specific interests are.

Good luck.
