I'm totally new to computers. I want to buy my first computer. I hear that Macs are much better than PCs on music. Why? PCs have speeds easily in 1.5GHz range while Macs are typically around 800MHz-1GHz. Also, I'm considering one of the new Power Mac G4 series with dual processors. Are they any good?

HI the computer I use is a Mac Dual 800 Mhz and it has so far proven to be probably one of the most stable Macs I have ever used.

Also don't be fooled by Mhz or GHz there is a lot more to Computer speed than just the clock speed. Remember when the Mac came out with the 400 Mhz G4 it was classified by the US Gvt as a supercomputer and for a time Apple was restrained from selling them to a lot of foreign countries whereas at the same time the Pentiums were running at almost double that clock speed and still were not in that category.

I use both PC's and Macs, if you want to be really creative and not spend a lot of time messing around setting things up then then the Mac is the Way to go.

On the other side of the bargain there are some companies that sell PC's pre configured for audio and these are usually well set up and reliable I believe Carillon is one of these.

Overall the Mac will work right out of the Box, of course you will have to install your software ETC. PC's take a lot more work but a well configured PC can give a Mac a run for it's money. It's just that one piece of software you install on the PC that seems to send the entire system haywire and that can bea real headache to fix especially when compared to fixing a Mac
