I've got a load of piano samples that I would like to play using my keyboard plugged into a MIDI interface into my Mac. The idea is that the samples would be mapped to each key and my Mac would then produce the fine Steinway sound for me.

Can I do this using Logic Express 7?

So far it seems that I need an 'EXS instrument editor' to do this, but it's not available in LE7. Is this right? Are there any other methods?

Logic Express7 removed the EXS editor that was included in Logic Express 6.

Chicken Systems has a new app called Constructor. http://www.chickensys.com/
for building sampler instruments.

Redmatica has announced but not delivered Keymap a standalone EXS editor. http://www.redmatica.com

Also there is VSamp $39 that allows you to kemap samples, it's not pretty but is cpu effecient. I've been using it since OS9. Also comes with a nice downloadable sample collection. http://www.vsamp.com

Also do a search on this site for soundfont editor, once in soundfont form you can convert it to EXS within the EXSP24.
