Just throwing in the trash does not delete the files/folders. You have to empty the trash. Then the computer will delete anything you put in there.

Perhaps the easiest way is to have an extra harddrive. ( a total of three drives then one for OS-X - one for projects & audio + a third)
Copy projects & audio from drive 2 to drive 3. Reformat drive 2. Keep working on drive 3.
Eventually copy things from drive 3 to drive 2. Reformat drive 3 & keep working on drive 2.
etc, etc.

If you're willing to go through the work, your best bet is to reinstall OSX and make sure to only install the minimal software. Disable extra printer drivers, X11, extra programs, and anything else that can be turned off to free up space. That'll make the biggest difference.
That being said, your projects should never be on your boot volume, so be sure you have a second hard drive for them always.
