I'm sure everyones sick of answering questions like this but I haven't managed to find enough info yet to satiate my needs. I'm getting a new G4 soon and am looking to set it up somewhat for recording vocals, guitar and synth. I'm curious what suggestions you all have for a sound interface in the $500-1000 price range. Much thanks in advance.. cool.gif

French members (on the other side of this board) have suggested that the Tascam US428 was pretty good (+interesting price). Check it out there:
http://www.tascam.com/products/us428/index.php

Yukulele, who recommanded it in the first place and who sometimes pass by the english forum, has one and could maybe tell you more if you're interested...

Wow, easy Mr.T ;-)

I recommended it for specific needs from a user over there, but i'm sure many other solutions exist, depending on what you plan to do.

If you need, but do not own an audio interface (4 simultaneous ins, s/pdif), a midi interface (2 ins, 2 outs), a dual mic preamp (limited), and a remote control surface: yes, us-428 could be a good choice.

The first question should be: what software will i use with it? Will it fully support this audio interface? Only Slow Family can tell :-)

Bye

Wow, easy Mr.T ;-)

Do I really look like a horse?... I usually don't whinny...well, most of the time I don't...
Just wanted to quote the guy who really brought this up in the first place...
I'm just not the kind of guy who gets credit for something he hasn't found...
Sorry 'bout that.
Of course, you can also check:
-Motu's products (828*, 2408,...),
-Digidesign's products (Digi 001*, MBox and soon to come Digi002),
-Lots of other products: Audiophile Delta, Guillemot...

*these two could be a little bit out of budget considering your demands.

Hmm....what's with moving my thread to the MacOS 9 forum? It's really a hardware question, and I'm planning on most likely running OSX anyway. Strange..... Anyway, enough bitching. Current thoughts are I'll be running Logic Audio, as from what I've read that seems to be closest to what I'm looking for. I need audio ins and preferably MIDI as well. I'm scouring around for recommendations and this seems to be one of the best places to ask. I'm still mighty open to ideas....

Mr.T: what makes you say Digi001 and MOTU 828 are out of budget? I was able to find the MOTU for $800 and the Digi001 for a grand. Just Curious...much thanks for replying in the first place....

It SHOULD be on the macos 9 forum!
(read the subtitles of the forums, it's pretty clear, audio cards are mac hardware. But I won't be picky this time, want to go to bed) blink.gif

Well my mistake, prices, like always, are a little higher in here (France) due to import and outrageous taxes on audio material. Furthermore, I think I've been out of the "game" (searching for the best prices for audio gear) for too long... I've been using the same set up (at least at home) for about 5 years now (except for the soft side). You should, in my opinion, strongly considere the Motu 828...just hold your decision until July the 18th(Digidesign should announce a new Firewire interface...you never know...although, I doubt that it will be cheaper than the 828...).

i think the main consideration here has to be how many audio tracks you want to record at a time, how many individual outputs you'll need (routing into a desk?), and how many external midi devices you'r using. wink.gif
the 828 is an excellent solution but dosen't cover midi. however, the audio interfaces that do cover midi are pretty limited in this sense. angry.gif
your frustration with the os9 situation is something you'll have to live with for a few weeks, this is due to apples' time consuming quest to make x/classic the defacto solution for audio/midi and should be respected.
don't forget emagics' own solutions, namely emi 2/6 for audio (drivers are probably more up to date than any others) and mt4 or amt8 midi interfaces (or unitor8 if you want to synchronise with tape machines etc). rolleyes.gif
another consideration is that emagic are now a part of apple, so buying into their products should provide you an upgrade path into future developements!
cool.gif
it dosen't seem that you need to consider the quattro, a bit shaky at the moment but reccomended to catmixer for budget reasons. wink.gif
peace to all,later...
