I'm in the same boat. I currently use an iPod to play back pre-recorded pieces during my gigs. However, I'm touring in the Autumn and I want something more reliable as the iPod keeps skipping tracks etc - not something you want on stage!
I reckon at first I'd be just using iTunes for playing back the pre-recorded parts, but it'd be nice to use software instruments etc onstage too. I reckon a bottom of the range iBook would be enough for simply playing back MP3s, but how about running Logic Express and a couple of softsynths too? Would an iBook and 1GB RAM be okay, or is a Powerbook a necessity? |

I have a PC as well & while I like certain apps that work for it (ie Acid Pro & Sound forge.... both very cool). I gotta tell you: I LOVE MY MAC!!! I have a G4 Powebook 1.5ghz & it just runs like a cadillac (as opposed to my PC which runs like a Chrysler K Car...you know...does the job but kinda has its own little set of quirks & the occasional error messages that I still don't understand). I run Reason, Ableton LIVE 4 & Pro tools LE & they all run rock solid on the Mac.

it'll run sweet. People use Ableton Live for gigs, very useful for arranging, dropping bits in, changes etc.

I have a powerbook Ti 1Ghz 1Gig ram, and it is seriously outperformed by ANY Centrino laptop. The G4 processor is just slow compared to the Centrino.
If you want to buy a powerbook, wait for a new generation (G5, might be a long wait though), or get yourself a Centrino. Just my €00.2 (edited for spelling) Ce message a été modifié par warpmaster - mar. 9 août 2005, 22:52. -------------------- www.dashmusic.net

So where does the centrino beat the mac, you wish you had a pc? When you say performance are you talking about raw plug in power or overall feel or ability or track count or reliability or..? You read in the press about the intel laptop chip giving more power per watt if you get me, which is an exampe of why Apple are switching.

I took the plunge and snagged a 1.67ghz powerbook g4, it is definately rock solid as others have stated, but if you use audio-editing tools? there's none out there for osx, which is like cool edit/adobe audition, except for Peak
