Using 2 Hard Drives, how to separate files Options

i'm sure that most people have somewhat the same set up as i do, in that i have one 'boot' drive (40gig wd) for my applications and another 'capture' drive (160gig wd) for all my saved files (music, videos, pics, documents etc...). this is in case my boot drive gets corrupted, all my work is safe on another drive.

so i just cleared my drives and installed panther on both. when i put all my music files and my pics back on to my capture drive, it seems that it duplicates everthing onto the boot drive to access it. i'm having trouble telling my mac that all my files are coming from my capture. panther really wants to access everything from the boot. (i.e. if i have an mp3 on my capture and play it in itunes, it will remain on my capture and a file will be created in the itunes music folder on my boot, even though i've changed the directory in my itunes preferences). i don't remember this happening with jaguar. can anyone off some advice?

Don't know if this will help, but I just installed a second hard drive (Seagate Barracuda) on my G5 running 10.3.1. I am using it to store music files while keeping the apps on the original (boot) drive. Somewhere I read that one should not install the op system on the second drive, so I didn't. Everything works fine. Perhaps you should take the system off the second drive.

So it's not recommended to install Classic on one drive (barely 10gb) and Panther on another (128gb)? Ideally I would do this because my boot drive is really small and I experience general slowness and problems with log ins on both classic and panther.

I never install the operational system in a second drive. Why should I. One drive manages all software (partitioned with classic or not), and the other drives just hold the files.

looks like i'll erase my 'capture' and just start throwing files on it... it really makes more sense. i guess i can always boot up from the install cd if i have any problems with my boot drive.

again i appreciate all your help!

Thanks for this topic. If you have all of your files on a separate Hard Drive can you still open the file, or must you transfer it the Drive with the Application every time you need it?

not a problem... but it may be later on in the week before i have a chance to sit down for a few hours and get it done... i'll keep y'all posted...

Some general rules on how to separate files... And maintenance basis.

- Use one drive for the system, it may contain Classic alongside OSX. But if you can/want to boot in OS9 it's better to use a separate partition or drive for another copy of OS9
- On OSX keep everything on this drive save the audio/midi files of your projects, which would be better on a fast big drive.
- As a rule of thumb, the faster drive is for the working files.
- Think about a backup in some way.
- Clone your OSX system (use carbon copy for example) with your app and user folder in case. It'll save you time if something goes fishy.
- ALWAYS repare authorisations after ANY install and reboot (well make one big after a few install) and run the maintenance scripts using OnyX, Tinkertool pro, Xupport. It'll save you from the basic headaches of OSX.
