I have just finally rid my life of the pain in the arse that is windows and ibm compatibles but I dont understand how the mac makes noise cos an ibm pc wont make noise without a soundcard but the mac does but I am buying a m-adio 410 to record with so is the m-audio the equivilent of a soundcard? could it be used on a pc without a soundcard?

Macs have built in sound capabilities. Some have built in line level input at 16/44100. All have at least a headphone/speaker out. G5's have built in digital Optical S/PDIF in and out, and most Macs have some type of (usually tiny) speaker(s).

Yes it is a "soundcard" more correctly it is a "recording interface" with multiple inputs/outputs, mic preamps, and the ability to record at a higher quality than a consumer type soundcard. ...and yes it could also be used with a PC without a soundcard, OR with one for that matter.

Hope that sheds some light on some of your questions.
Good luck,
TD
