MOTU.com -- i have just installed it and tried it with Live 1.5... it works as well as the os9 version... the readme says that it doesn't save the prefs so it goes back to 44100 if you use 48k but that's ok... the only strange thing i noticed is that once i've used Live with the MotU, then quit, it switches the normal output to the MoTu instead of the mac's built-in speakers, but i changed that back to normal in the system pref sound panel. i will follow up or edit this post if i notice anything interesting about it. please do the same! and don't forget to use funky fonts

i'm gonna sell it soon if i don't here about SOMETHING! newenham! i don't even bother too much with uppr case, lt alone funky fonts when i'm posting. these forums are about MUSIC. what's written is what's important, not how it's presented. [COLOR=orange][SIZE=14][FONT=Optima] also, when this kind of thing happens, i feel like someone has slipped acid in my drink! especially as i use preetty strong reading glasses that MAGNIFY everything...... -------------------- one for all and all for one...

About the MK2 (I got one I got One!!!! there was beta dirvers available about 2 month ago… I got them, havent installed them so… can't tell you.
Be logical, would MOTU drop the entire PCI324 range just to annoy you? no way… 2408 is their most successfull interface (think 828 is second) check MOTU's site or Apple software pages (I had it there) -------------------- Our Classifeds • Nos petites annonces • Terms Of Service / Conditions d'Utilisation • Forum Rules / Règles des Forums • MacMusic.Org & SETI@Home

I also downloaded the OS X drivers for the 828, and since I had no multitrack software for OS X, I downloaded the trial version of BIAS' Deck software. Everything worked perfectly - I don't have an ADAT to sync to or use optical in/out ANYWAY, so the fact that those aren't yet supported by these drivers didn't affect me any.
I haven't yet tried to record multiple simultaneous tracks, but given my single-track success (and my OS 9 success with multiple tracks) things look very optimistic. I plan on recording a tune tomorrow night with a few tracks and see how it goes. By the way, I really dig the Deck software. Very intuative, easy on the eyes, great plug-ins and effects... just nice. Sadly, the LE version of the software (sans a lot of plug-ins) is probably more fitting for my current budget given last week's MOTU 828 purchase and upcoming iBook purchase ... Mike |

damann you're a rather sad person and i'm glad i got some acid in your body
fenomenal, there aren't many fx for osx yet anyway. I recommend giving the Superdestry FX a try, they're free and work on osx and you can get interesting noises after a lot of tweaking. I think Bias has carbonized (or whatever) vBox. And that's all I know of for osx. Maybe someone should start an OS X VST thread? |

I just installed the MOTU OS X public beta driver for the 828 on my ibook G3 500Mhz.
Here are my experiences thus far: iTunes - plays though the 828 fine. Bias Deck LE 3.5 - downloaded the trial, installed. Was testing with a mic plugged into the 828 was getting a signal through, CPU meter windows does not work. and I cannot get hardware monitoring. Then I clicked something (can't remember what) and Deck crashed hard and fails to restart. Reinstalled the 828 drivers to no help there. Deck still crashes on startup. I need a multi-track recorder for OS X. I guess I will have to wait and see if MOTU provides a AudioDesk for OS X. I'll keep messing around with it....and let you all know how it goes... |

Aren't we all in the same situation Anyway, as the audiodesk software is mainly a midiless/a few bells and whistles version of DP, you'll have to wait until Christmas the release of DP. Can't have before it's finished, no? Uh? And newenham, Post how you like to, but remember, you can't force others to agree on such things as "funky fonts". See what MOTU is doing to us. We should revolt. But on a serious note. I was so mad when MOTU started ignoring my emails, that I emailed them saying I was going to make my own damn drivers. now I haven't built them yet but, I guess I am going to keep the faith even though the Delta 1010 is looking really good now.

I have a workaround for Deck crashing every time you launch it!
Turn off your MOTU 828 and then try to launch Deck. I bet if you tried that, it launched perfectly. It did for me. After Deck is launched, turn the MOTU unit back on. Sweet. |

I they incompetent or just lazy? probably neither, ruxx. i imagine if they were incompetent, they wouldn't have made such excellent products so far, and if they were lazy, they wouldn't have successfully marketed any of those products. when you say "two year old OS" you have to think about how long the OS has been stable enough to do development on. i don't know about anyone else, but when i was using the OSX public beta (less than two years ago), it wasn't even stable enough to check my email, let alone program something as sensitive as audio software. look at how long it took adobe to rebuild photoshop? and they are *very* agressive with their development. not to mention the fact that apple has been very tight with coreaudio information up until the release of jaguar. i think now that jag is out, we can really mark the beginning of audio on OSX. using that attitude, i think seeing a sotfware release by january 03 will be impressively quick. -------------------- there can be hours between the so and the what of the so

At least they've got 3.1 for OS 9..
That's a good sign... Or maybe not.... I hope that they are not carbonizing DP 3.1. Does anyone know if DP 3.1 will be written in Obj-C??? |

They told us that the OSX version of DP was going to be out mid 2002, I got all giddy when I saw they had 3.1. I noticed that its OS9. I have lost my faith in MOTU. They release the 2408MK3 and DP3.1 with no OSX support. I'm sorry but the reason developers get prerelease versions of OSs is so they can have the updates ready.

QUOTE the reason developers get prerelease versions of OSs is so they can have the updates ready. quite right, in principle. and with productivity type applications, this has generally worked out. after all, even microfilth office had an x version in a reasonable amount of time. but i repeat myself: QUOTE apple has been very tight with coreaudio information up until the release of jaguar. i think now that jag is out, we can really mark the beginning of audio on OSX the fault lies in apple, not in motu. coincidence that logic is the only major multitracker that is os x ready? i think not. apple is playing it close to the chest. perhaps because things aren't quite ready for primetime yet, but just the same... and in all seriousness, would we *want* audio software that had been built and tested on a pre-release os? for me, the answer is no. i want to know that my software is stable and clean and responds to the os the way i expect it to. just like people say "never get version 1 because it's always buggy" i think a wise course of action is "never develop based upon version 1, because it's always buggy." of course, all this is a lot of talk. i want dp3 and 828 for osx right now. -------------------- there can be hours between the so and the what of the so

So what is Cubase SX then? Been shipping two weeks now and works brilliantly. I spoke to MOTU people at AES and DP for OSX is just a few weeks away -------------------- Paul Wiffen

Wiff,
They have been saying that for months, I can't remeber what fourm or who said it but it was said that "you can't really trust a release date untell you see it on the shelve. I have been more then patiant with them. I can easly sell my 2408mkII and get a delta 1010. The only problem is. I have used and fallen in love with DP. I mean I don't have the money for protools TDM, and DP is so similar it's scary. But I need something now. My G4 came with both OS9 and OSX and I was more then fine using 9 but I got OS10.2 and I really don't want to ever use 9 again. with my 800MHZ G4 with 640ram running OS 9.2, can not reach the level of performence of my G3 iBook running at 600MHZ and 265 ram and OS 10.2. now that really says something for jag. All my Graphic apps are OSX ready, I just what my audio too. -------------------- BING BING BLEEP ERRRRRRR[I]

Synthetik - has Jaguar really improved performance on your iBook that much? It sounds like we're running the same apps on the same Mac (the iBook) and I've been thinking about getting Jaguar, but haven't heard field reports from anyone using it on a daily basis so far.

I had only just aquired OSX 10.2 about a month ago. I have a dual gig G4 (1 gig of ram) running Logic with a MOTU 2408 mkII on OS9, so I recently attempted to install OSX 10.2 on a separate partition on my main HD.
Unfortunately for me, the OSX installer refused to continue with the installation, locking up the machine just before you get to insert the second installer disk. I tried everything, making the HD the master (it was the slave, I thought that would solve my problem), removing some memory (I found some info on a site that stated you had to have your memory in the slot furthest from the processor, and that OSX is very fussy when it comes to the 'brand' of memory in a G4), etc etc. 3 hours later, no luck. I still have a blank partition on the drive reserved for "road testing" OSX Logic. And still no drivers from MOTU...come on guys! However, I am extremely happy with my system on OS9, but I am eager to begin the crusade into OSX territory. I feel my dual gig machine will give up more of it's 2nd processor's steam under X. Anyone had any similar installation problems with Jag? -------------------- Nobody can take from you what you give freely.

PS: It will be a while I reckon before audio software stabilises on OSX. Logic 5.4 looks good on Jag...however, I will not be jumping into this pool headfirst, it would be insane for me to leave OS9 behind right now, considering how fat with plugs/apps my HD is currently...
I feel like I only just got my audio apps/plugs as I originally imagined them on OS9 recently! And I want to get more out of it creatively before I have to sit there forever looking at installers, debugging, distracted from making music with my computer! I'm treading carefully. -------------------- Nobody can take from you what you give freely.

My story is pretty similar to yours. I have a dual 1 gig with 1 gig of Ram. Im running cubase, peak, recycle, reason and tons of vst's including waves gold bndle etc...OS9 with a MOTU2408mkII. I installed OSX the first day I got my machine about 8 months ago. I quickly realized I was going to be pulling my hair out if i tried to run both OS's After reinstalling several times I wiped OSX and have been running only OS9 since. I'd love to give OSX a shot again when i can run only OSX but.....no MOTU drivers (come on guys), and its going to really hurt getting all my software/soft synths etc up to speed.

I have a strange feeling motu is oing to go under. for one, they dont have enough money for call waiting. its busy all day when you try to call... And, of coruse, no support in OS X. I am waiting for apple/logic firewall interface to come out, so i may dump motu once and for all.

the 828 may be in a class by itself, that is why i bought it, unfortunately i can't seem to get the dang thing to work in jaguar.
i'm a graphics guy professionally and ditched OS9 more than a year ago and have no real desire to boot into it anymore. now i'm starting to get obsessed with the audio thing on osx and have decided to start struggling with my motu 828 again. so far i've had no luck getting any sound from in on my machine (the machine is great, i forget the particulars but it regularly handles 1gig photoshop files without a problem). bias peak crashes when i hit the record button. my copy of deck 3.5 doens't seem to get any input from the motu. most of the other audio apps i've found on the web crash or don't respond. i also have reason 2.0 and live 2.0.1, but have never recorded using them, i'm not even really sure how. the only thing that i think i may have messed up is when i originally installed the motu beta drivers i was over eager and didn't read the intall notes. i installed it while the unit was on and then trashed the beta driver installer. now it says i need to uninstall the beta using the installers i threw out. i can't find those for download anymore. i logged into os9 and tossed the motu 10.2 extension and then tried reinstalling with the 1.01 installer, but i'm still getting the same problems. any suggestions anyone out there? |
