how many audio tracks with effects will I get using a powerbook 1 ghz and will there be playback problems and dubbing latency

I've done sessions using the max tracks, and 16 soft-synths. When CPU usage gets high I "Freeze" my tracks.
I record to an external firewire drive. with my 1Ghz 12inch Powerbook. milage will vary depending on plugs used.
