I have just picked up Logic Express 6 so that I can finally stop having to use OS 9 for anything (to ditch Logic Silver 4.8).

However, I'm getting a wierd error on my 800MHz G3 iBook when I launch the application, that says

"CUBE needs Altivec compatible cpu (G4 and up)" and then I have to quit the app.

Logic Express should work with a G3, so what is this 'CUBE' thing referring to? I have an edirol UA-30 USB audio solution (using core audio driver) and an emagic MT4 USB MIDI box that I want to use with Logic. I have a feeling the problem is being caused by the UA-30 in some way, because logic launches okay if I don't have this plugged in (though I get another error telling me I have no audio interface plugged in).

Can anybody shed any light on this?

Thanks in advance
Dune

Should work, I was running Logic6 last year on an iBook/700 G3, until I picked up my Powerbook.

If you have any third party plugs installed, remove them. Then add them back one at a time to find the offender.

i do remember reading somewhere about a plugin called CUBE that is extrememly taxing on the cpu and requires no less that G4. Perhaps you have this? Search for 'CUBE' and see if any plugins come up.

Probably talking about Virsyn Cube which is a softsynth. Probably tried to install a demo at one point.

Thanks, I had forgotten that I had installed the standalone version a demo version of 'cube' that was on a magazine cover CD. When I searched for it in the finder, it turned out that it had installed a VST version as well, which probably explains why it was upsetting Logic. However, since Logic OS X is AU-only, that is still quite odd! Needless to say, all cube components are not sitting in the trash.

I will see if this clears up the problem when I get home to my xs-key.

Thanks

Hello, I'm considering getting Logic Express myself, also for a G3/800 iBook. So first, thanks for clarification. I landed earlier today on a bogus web page at Apple's website, so I was quite worried.

But I still have some questions, so here we go: with my config, I can record without any problem at least 10 audio tracks with MOTU Audiodesk 1.02 (under OS9). I had the opportunity to try DP4.12, and it sometimes complained that my hardware is too slow, even for very small projects (e.g., 4 tracks). Half of the time it even crashed !

Although I understand that OSX is slowlyer than OS9, this seems far too much. Am I right hoping that switching to Logic would be a good idea ? Tired of the dual boot.

Thanks for your help!

Not sure about how many tracks can be recorded simultaneously, to be honest, as I only have a lowly Edirol UA-30 (with 2 inputs). I can understand you being sick of the dual boot - it was that that led me to get Logic Express for my machines after struggling along with Logic 4.8 for a couple of years.

Hopefully someone here can give you some more useful advice on this, "Grrrr"

Thanks, Dunepilot. Do you mix down only very few tracks as well ?
