I'm using Reason and BIAS Peak on an Apple G5. I want to purchase a device such as the M-Audio Ozone or Edirol's PCR-A30 to get the most out of the software. I'm not a keyboardist, but I'd like something that would allow a maximum amount of expressive control. I like the fact that the Edirol's keys are velocity sensitive and that both units are reasonably priced. I think I need one of these controllers with a built in audio interface. M-Audio says that the Ozone uses apple's core audio, while the edirol site doesn't mention this. What is the best route to take? Does it make more sense to buy something like a Firewire 410 and a different type of controller? I'd like to keep costs reasonable. I don't expect to have anything more than 1 mic and 1 midi deviced hooked in. Can anyone give me advice on the route to take here? Has anyone used both?

Hi. I use the Firewire 410 and the PCR-30 on my Mac G4 running Panther, and Logic 6, and it's a great combination. I highly recommend it. The PCR-30 is a good keyboard. My other system is a G5 with dual 2.0s, MOTU 828 MKII, and the Edirol PCR-80.
The 30 is a bit smallish for a keyboard though. I'm not a keyboardist myself and I thought a small keyboard would be ok for me, but I much prefer a larger one.

Thanks for the response Terrywill. It seems like the 410 is the way to go. The PCR30 looks pretty good too. I'm not a keyboardist, so 32 keys should be just fine for me.

Have you guys tried the M-Audio Radium series, or the Ozone/Oxygen?
How do you think they compare to the Edirol PCRs?

I've played around with the Ozone. It's a solid piece of equipment but no midi input. You can't really beat the price though. I'm still debating which way to go really. For $250 you can get the Ozone and you pretty much have all you need. Firewire 410 is about $400 and the PCR30 another $175 for a total of $575.
