Hello, I cannot find any useful information, so I have decided to ask people who know what they're talking about.

I cannot figure out what the heck I should buy? I have decided to get a mac g5 and logic 6 platinum, but I have no idea how midi works, and what I need.

I want to make music that has synth drums, bass, and effects, me actually playing guitar, and me actually singing. No body will help me and I'm very confused. I don't know if logic is the best software, or pro tools, or what? I don't even know if I need to buy a drum machine and a midi interface and hook it all up so I can have the synth drum noises. Can I use Logic 6 platinum to make all my instruments and noises come together, and then record them?

I went to protools.com and saw their "basic midi setups" and I found out how much the protools hd stuff costs, altogether it's close to 13,000 us dollars! HELP ME! I just want to make great quality music. I have a lot of great ideas and I need to get them out of my head, but I am so darn frustrated. Please help me out.

Hi, I am now completely lost.

I cannot sleep. But, I have stumbled acrost a few things:

Digi 001:
I can plug in a guitar, a mic, and a midi controller(sampler or drum pad etc. right?), and use logic 6 platinum to assign sounds to those drum pads/samplers.(right?) sad.gif

A) A Digi 001 comes with pro tools 6 software and a pci card. Do these both work with a mac g5? I am also completely new to macintosh, I though pci was a pc (windows) interconnect for expansion boards? Mac has them too?

B) Is this a rediculous price? Darn near 1000 us dollars? Will all these wonderful (?) features of the digi 001 work with logic 6 and the free protools software? Do I need something else? Are Digidesign's products cheap pieces of garbage?

Thanks in advance. ( I think I will sleep now.)

IF you get Digi-001 or Digi-002, you DONT absolutely need Logic.
ProTools LE WILL do midi.
However most people seem to think that midi is perhaps ProTools weakest link.

There are any number of software based DAW:s that will fill your need:s.

Digital Performer 4.1 from Motu will be out in the beginning August
Does both midi and audio 4.1 will work with ProTolls hardware and support Audio Units.
( a new plugin format pushed by Apple ) This is great app.

Steinberg:s Cubase/Nuendo apps will do both midi and audio.
Emagic:s Logic ( you were thinking about )

Ableton Live, is another.
A cheap but well thought of application/daw is Metro 6 from http://www.sagantech.biz/

I just need software that will work well with midi software and audio. The pro tools comes for free the with digi 001, and I will probably buy logic because I heard it's good stuff.

How does the digi hook up? Do you link it to the computer's firewire port? Is that a bad thing? (I don't know this stuff...)

Will logic and pro tools recognize the digi 001, and any midi controllers hooked to it?

If I hooked up a device, (which is better?): drum machine or sampler, and do I need a sound module, or can I make logic or pro tools recognize that I am hitting buttons on a midi controller (drum machine) and the software in the g5 will make the noise that I tell it to, when I hit those buttons.

Which drum machines or samplers are a great buy? Do I even need them or will logic or protools have a built in drum machine/sampler?

Thanks again, from a confused musician.

J_Ivans if your just starting out I would suggest getting the Digidesign M-Box instead of the Digi 01. It has what you need including the software (Pro Tools LE) and two very good sounding focusrite pre amps. As for software go for Logic 6 because it will be able to run alongside the Pro Tools nicely. As for sounds and samples consider getting into software sampling maybe the EXS24....or the mack daddy of them all..the Kontakt sampler...either one will intergrate seamlessly with Logic. Then for synths you can choose from an abundance of soft-synths available. Mind you these are merely cost effective suggestions and are based on a virtual style set up within your G5. Last but not least you should consider a midi controller keyboard...I would suggest the Oxygen line.

I am not a total expert by any stretch, but i have a JV2080 sound module, G4mac, logic and a mackie 1604-VLZ mixing desk, an audiowerks 8 card and it can do everything you seem to want.
all fairly affordable.
cheers cool.gif
