Hi,
First time post. I hope someone can help. I have a digital Stanton turntable S/PDIF'd to an Ultralite mk3 and out to a 8-Core Mac Pro. When I check my sound Preferences on the Mac, it shows that it's receiving sound from the turntable (the imput level "meter" is animated with the sound from the LP) and my output is set to "Line Out" (the way I've always listened to things on my Mac - and that still outputs, say, iTunes). Here are three screenshots if this helps: I've tried playing around with different settings in the MOTU Audio setup, but even tho the graphic meter (in Mac Preferences) shows that it's receiving sound, I'm still unable to get anything out of the external speakers with this MOTU setup (tho I can still listen to iTunes, so it's not a speaker problem). I opened up Audio Hijack Pro and a simple audio editor and the sound never reaches there either, so I'm stumped Also, headphones hooked directly to the UltraLite deliver sound. Do I just have my settings wrong somehow in the MOTU audio setup window? It shouldn't be such a head-scratcher, but am I missing something obvious here? thanks, Rod |

you've got to use the cue mix console (motu) to patch the spdif to your outs.
it's a separate app. i bet that's your bottleneck. |

Thanks for the reply.
Back when I used a 2408 mkII it worked all the time, but instead of getting a new card for an updated Mac Pro, I picked up the UltraLite and I'm sure that it worked just fine a few months ago. I think that I'm going to get rid of any trace of MOTU on my drive and begin again from the initial disc without upgraded downloads and try it step-by-step to see what happens. I'm still a bit unsure about the MOTU audio settings in the window, so I'm going to try different settings. I think I was hoping for someone to say, "Oh, those settings are wrong - do this!" Still open to other ideas. I'll check this cue mix console business tho I've never had to use it before. Rod |

Open CueMix and check to make sure that on the "mixes" tab, you haven't muted the S/PDF''s, and the faders are up. |

Thanks for the replies. It seems that I've discovered where I went wrong here.
I was resistant to the CueMix answer - both from here and from a surly guy from the MOTU help desk - 'cause I've been able to transfer and record just fine for years without ever opening that software (I looked at it for the first time yesterday). What I didn't realize was that my earlier use of "Amadeus" was just fine for doing what I want to do (or audio editing software in general), but after basic "Amadeus" became incompatible with Apple's "Snow Leopard," I was under the impression that I still could receive sound thru the basic line of UltraLite-to-desktop, but houstonmusic's mention of a patch sent me to check if I could use something else that I'm already familiar with like "Audacity" or "Soundbooth" and I was able to do some easy transfer and editing with the latter just fine. thanks again for the help, Rod |

I gave up on MOTU as their Technical support line is a disgrace to the company. The phone line is always busy. Every time I needed assistance it took me on the average of 2 months to get through. And then the Techs treated me like I was an idiot & never solved my interface issues. I sold all my MOTU software. Digital Performer, Symphonic Instruments & BMP ( which I could never get installed. I went with Apple Logic 7 have had no need for Tech Service & am very happy with them. I battled with Digital performer for 3 years before I finally gave up. Mainly because their Techs were not helpful & did not behave in a Professional manner.
I just noted the post by rostasi & noticed his comment about the Tech as SURLY. So, it appears that my contact with the Techs is validated. @ Jason.
you got a point. i use DP7... mostly because i started out on Performer 1 on a mac plus in '85. old guy inertia. but the hardware is pretty questionable, and the phone tech support, though they've never been surly to me, is a true pain to contact. my MO on getting them is to just keep re dialing... and know it's going to take 15 mins at least to connect. |
