I'm relativly new to digital regording. I'm not completely incompetent, but i am defenatly new to this and just need some help getting pointed in the right direction. I've been producing beats on Reason 2.5 on my PowerBook G4 for a while now, and the time has come to start laying down vocals. I have a Sure-57 which i just plug into the mic input on my laptop. Obviously the sound quality is horible as the mic is underpowered and i'm having latency problems. From doing some research i have gathered that an interface would solve most of my problems, but now the question is which one? All i need is one XLR mic input, one or two midi inputs and a couple headphone outputs. I don't think there is much i'm missing, but please inform me if i am. Anybody that can tell me what interface would work well for me, or even a good place online to get more information is a saint and a god.

Hi there, riverdalereject!

Get yourself a PreSonus Firebox, and all your problems will be solved. I use one on my G4 PowerBook, and it's great. Don't travel with it, though, because the volume knobs are very fragile and will short out on you. Mine's in the shop now, but this isn't to discourage you from buying it. It's a great mo-sheen. I've also got the PreSonus Inspire, and it works great, too. Go to Guitar Center this month and pick up one with your Guitar Center Credit card, 'cause they're having a 12-month financing deal right now. Good luck, and let me know how it goes!

Now I don't really know how much a Firebox costs, but I figure it's kind of expensive for your needs.

I have a lot of friends working with gear from M-audio (www.m-audio.com) and they're all very satisfied. They have interfaces that are small, light and easy to travel with. The sound is of course great!

If you wanna spend some more cash I can recommend the Motu Traveler. www.motu.com

Maybe you should consider buying a condensator-mic to. The SM57 is a great microphone but maybe not the perfect one for vocals. Take a look at Röde Microphones. (www.rode.com.au) I guess the NT1 or the NT2 would suit you perfectly.

Hope you find what you need!
