400 mhz... That is really, "seriously" slow! It is as slow as an old man with a bad foot going up the Metro/Subway/Underground stairs, in the cold, during morning Rush Hour, begging for money. No, really, 400mhz is slooooooooooooooow. I do remember in the Old Days seeing a 400mhz Mac and thinking: "One of these days, I'm gonna get one of those!" No, I never did purchase that 'dream machine'.
I don't remember any serious music made or played on them... I recall marvelling at the fact that music or sound could be made: "On a computer! Wow! But, the music was never more than samples, loops and thangs... Like Fast Food... Nothing substantial... OK, nice, interesting, ground breaking even, but, can't remember anything on 400mhz...
I do recall that, they were more expensive than a 2.5 badd ass Mac Daddy today... How old is it? 6-8 years old? Anyway, that was drug money well spent... I'm still alive and have Mac Daddy running flawlessly! Really, I am interested to hear what the Forum has to say about 400mhz. Remember, most important is your creation, originality, vibe and luck... Any one of them will result in you having people begging, paying you to try their fastest computer(s)... You'll have more computers than Shaq has sneakers...
If you can pull it off, please post your triumph... I will be selling , no trading my gear... for older, slower and cheaper gear... Might even be able to afford drugs again.

Hey, thanx a lot for answers, those ironical too... I realise that old G4 it is not miracle... But here was a misunderstanding: I didn't ask if I can do music on my "old man with a bad foot". I asked if G4/400 mhz would work with mentioned M-Audio stuff (my G4 runs under 10.2.8, not 9 by the way). If I wasn't wrong, my idea was: -I need only G4 to keep tracks of software sequencer on it (Reason) -external M-Audio interface should overtake sound working out and to relieve main CPU That's why I thought that CPU speed is not so primary thing, if card could take on sound. I'm not computer geek, and I'm totally newbie in electronic music (until now; I've played other than virtual instruments ). cheers

Hi, I had a 400mhz titanium, Forget mbox firewire, or anything new. The best match is a MOTU firewire drive. I successfully used an 828 with mine and as you probably know, forget installing tiger, but panther is OK, and max out your ram. As a matter of fact I could sell you my full ram and or Titanium cheap if you want. Good luck! Dave, 914-715-5588

Hi, MacMusicFolk:
Ain't nothin' wrong with a 400 MHz G3, baby! I'm using one with a MOTU 2408, DP 3.1 and other software. No it's not the latest, no it's not the fastest. But, as you say, it's a tool that in the right hands can make beautiful music. Just a few years ago, my buddy was using the same machine with ProTools to do work for CBS and ABC!
BTW, IMHO, X stinks, 9.2 rocks!

Hello again, I rushed with flying colors into forum. I had read some topics about Tiger and Firewire interfaces and I felt into despair. Is Tiger a huge computer virus or what? Because I have got my G4 anyway, I will first buy an interface and I will see what hapens. If slow, I'll buy one of these funny-but-powerful MacMini.
"BTW, IMHO, X stinks, 9.2 rocks!"
To make precise, Tiger stinks. I have Jaguar (rev 10.2.8) on G4-works excellent, never crashes (my G4 sometimes works few days continuously). My Powerbook runs under Panther (rev 10.3.9)-yeah, works good, sometimes goes crazy to dance with that f**ng multicolour rainbow ball. My sister has eMac under Tiger. Oohh, such a experience! It's gonna to chase Windows XP. Try to use apple-F keys to get to "Find file" panel. It couldn't be more unpleasant, more sophisticated, more unintuitive.
cheers to You all
