Hi boys,
Logic keeps crashing. I've got a G5 dual processor power mac. I'm trying to play a song that has lots of audio and plug ins etc. but everytime it crashes as soon as it starts playing. Have I got the settings wrong? I wasn't sure how I should have the buffer settings and whether I should be chaning these for recording and then again for playback? I've tried playing around with these but I'm not sure what I'm doing and if this is even what I should be doing? Just read another post...should I buy an external hard drive? Any ideas? Jen. |

QUOTE (jen123456 @ Dec 2 2005, 10:46) I've got a G5 dual processor power mac. .... lots of audio and plug ins etc. but everytime it crashes as soon as it starts playing. I'm afraid a bit more clarification is needed... 1) Which OS are you running 2) How much RAM do you have 3) What is your HD size and how much of it is abvailable? 4) Which DP G5? 5) By crashing, do you mean that Logic is quitting or that it pops-up a dialog saying "too many... Continue"? 6) Logic Express or Logic Pro. which version? |

Ok I'm a bit of a computer idiot but here goes....
1) Which OS are you running; Mac OS X 10.4.3 (8F46) Kernel Version: Darwin 8.3.0 2) How much RAM do you have 2 x 1GB 3) What is your HD size and how much of it is abvailable? Macintosh HD: Capacity: 233.64 GB Available: 108.69 GB 4) Which DP G5? Not sure about this, does this answer it? Machine Name: Power Mac G5 Machine Model: PowerMac7,3 CPU Type: PowerPC G5 (3.0) Number Of CPUs: 2 CPU Speed: 2.3 GHz L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB Memory: 2 GB Bus Speed: 1.15 GHz 5) By crashing, do you mean that Logic is quitting or that it pops-up a dialog saying "too many... Continue"? Yeah Logic shows and warning and says it must stop, there's no option to continue 6) Logic Express or Logic Pro. which version? I've got Logic Pro 7 (I bought the 7.1 update but when I tried to install it it said that newer versions of the software were already installed so I didn't). I've been using a Yamaha grand piano sample in my song and that seems to take ages to load up and save etc. 10 x longer than any of the audio....i wonder if that's the problem? Thanks for your time and help. Jen (Also someone suggested that I should look at the CPU info...do you know where that is?) |

Thanks for all the additional info. At least we know you have a pretty well configured Mac that should rum Logic Pro7 without trouble.
The puzzling bit is: QUOTE I bought the 7.1 update but when I tried to install it it said that newer versions of the software were already installed so I didn't) This tells me that there is something wrong with the installation, or you HD authorisations... BTW, latest version is 7.1.1 which should be available through your "software update" menu (under the blue apple). How to repair authorisations and do a thorough soft maintenance on you mac? Check two freewares: Onyx (in English) and Tools3X (in French). I prefer the latter becuase of its interface, but they basically provide the same services. If the problems persist, I'd recommend a re-install of Logic (back-up your songs first) from scratch. The trouble could also come from the environment in one of the songs you are trying to play. Last but not least, good help can be found on http://community.sonikmatter.com/forums/ but I see you've already found your way there |

Thanks yep, My computer does the software updates itself (it asks of course) so I think that's why I didn't need to buy the disc and try and do it myself...silly me! Yeah I already went to Sonikmatter but got no response, hence I tried a few forums but this is the only one which I got a response from. Thank you. I did read through them all though. Other advice I was given by a friend was; to check the CPU usage and I'm not sure how and to defrag the computer....again I don't know how to do this on a mac. I really think the problem was too much audio....I guess it just can't handle that much audio, plug ins and effects? (I had approx 40 tracks of audio and a grand piano plug in and effects etc....All of my other songs were working just not this one with lots of audio. Anyway in the end I've started from scratch again, frozen my plug in, merged all the vocals (and I'll just re-do them after I've got the rest of the track done) etc. etc. And now it's working...but I was really disappointed that i've had to do it this really long winded way!?! ...but that's only 'cause I'm a beginner I'll get used to it!
So should I download Onyx to defrag/maintain? Thanks again for your help. Ce message a été modifié par jen123456 - ven. 2 déc. 2005, 18:01. |

Sure, 40 tracks is an awfull lot... even for a G5. Especially off one HD!
The update thing is strange though... Since 7.1 is a chargeable upgrade, it shouldn't update if you didn't install it. As to de-frag: not really needed and potentially dangerous on a mac. What Onyx does is more day to day maintenance like rebuild authorisations, empty caches and pre-binding. Usefull and harmless. |

Just so you know. When installing 7.1, just ignore that little thing about the software being newer. It is just a small glitch with the install disc. Everyone that has 7.1 saw that screen and just disregarded it, so you should do the same. Just so you know, 7.1 is more stable with less crashes. So, do as I said and install 7.1, then tell us how it goes. Trust me, it will more than likely fix your problems.
