Hi guys and gals,

I have some real problems with a new purchased Griffin iMic. When I record from any source like Sony MD player or my battery powered condensor mic I get really really very much noise. It is unusable. First I tought the iMic is defect so I went back to the store and exchanged it. New iMic has the same problems.

I have an iBook 1.42 and Tiger 10.4.2

Any idea's?

Cheers

I've had the same problem!

Open your Audio Midi Setup (Utilities folder) and check the sample rate and bit depth.
It turns out to be an auto change from 16 bit to 8 bit.
Worked for me.

I was going to say chuck the iMic away and buy a proper interface. But, um, that AMS sample rate/bit depth auto-change thing might help, too. biggrin.gif

I will buy a proper interface. I am saving for a Focusrite Saffire.

I will try that hint. Hope really that it works.

Only joking!

Although ever since the iMic was released, there have been many, many disgruntled users posting here who thought an incredibly basic $35 interface was going to be a decent I/O solution for recording audio. It's not. I had one. It was rubbish.

Honestly, you'll have precious little joy using the iMic for anything other than very crude audio I/O. I appreciate that money is tight and you've already bought the iMic, so I'm simply saying don't expect miracles from a small plastic disc. It just about works, but not very satisfactorily.

I'm guessing you have an AT C1000s as your battery-powered condenser mic. That is a much more professional piece of equipment than the iMic. Until you get a decent interface, you'll always be disapppointed with the results.

BTW, the Saffire is OK, but have you looked at the PreSonus FireBox? It's about £100 cheaper here in the UK, so you'd have it quicker than the Saffire and the preamps are of higher quality. It has other merits, too - check out the various other FireBox threads running on these boards.
