Hello all, I'd like to buy a brand new set up in order to record live shows as multitracks. I'd like to know if some of you have ever done this kind of things. I'd like to get a powerbook G4 1,5 Khz 15" + Motu Traveller (is this sound card great???). I might need to record 8-16 tracks, for over 1H30. What kind of gear/softwares do ya use? Please, let me know. Thanks.

barnee,
I would not go for a SW based live recording setup at all, use a suitable hardware multitracker instead.
The worst thing which can happen is a power failure or a SW crash during the show. Everything recorded so far will be lost!
I use the Alesis HD24 for recording live shows. Records up to 24 Tracks, on powerfailure everithing remains on the disk, when power is back, boots in 5sec.
For editing and mixdown you can use your favorite SW. Get the files from the recorder via firewire, put it into your project and mix it!
cheers, quark

The trick with any recording work sw-based or hardware-based is to get to know your setup thoroughly.
Many world class artist rely on sw-based setups for their live work - Madonna/Black Eyed Peas and many others, use Digital Performer and MOTU gear for their live shows.
If you setup your system properly, you will not have any major problems with a sw-based MOTU setup.

I use a motu mk828, an octo pre Le with a g4 1.5, 1.5ram with audio desk as my sw. This makes it possible for me to either go off the board and still have my own levels or use my mics for other situations. The only problems I have so far is my lack of knowledge.=)

hey!
I finally got :
PowerBook G4 1,5Go RAM 15" 1,5Ghz. + Motu Traveler
I've recorded a show on 8-tracks. It's pretty cool!!!!!
I was planning to buy an extra card for optional inputs. The RME Octamic D has nice reviews.
What about that Focusrite Octopre LE? I've read that it was not the best Focusrite product. Some says :"it has focusrite only the name".

Go for RME !! The unit sounds cristal clear, adds no color at all. IMHO way better than the focusrite LE.

I totally forgot about this place to post! Hey people, I finally bought a second Traveler. So I have recorded a live show on 16 analog tracks!! I then have bought a Behringer ADA8000 to expand to 24 tracks. 48Khz/24bits. for more than 1 hour. No trouble so far.
