Yesterday in the studio I decided to risk Logic 7.

The reason for this was three-fold. Firstly you gotta do it sometime - and with all the exciting synths etc .. Secondly the singer for the band I was recording could sing in tune so I wasn't so worried about a lack of Autotune .. Thirdly - the Bass Player in the band is my local Mac dealer - so if I got any problems - he could check out the hardware side of things.

I've got to say this was the most embarrasing day in the studio I have ever had. And I've been working on music production for 5 years (3 with logic).

When I first started using logic on a PC and got hold of an "evaluation" version I used to get loads of crashes - but I expected that - and it showed me what a great engine Logic was - and encouraged me to go out and buy the full version.

Yesterday was worse than PC time. I logged all the crashes I got in a notebook - I had 15 throughout the course of the 6 hour session - for reasons as diverse as cancelling a bounce - to saving (!?!) - to editing a frozen track.

Even the track automation wouldn't work properly in places. We got several instances of files that were okay being converted from 24 bit to 8 bit format - which meant lost takes - nightmare. One of these files was two days old!

I think my local dealer was even more embarrased than I was - fortunately it was his takes that were lost.

Our conclusion - you're better off running a crap PC with a hacked version of Logic than running Logic Pro 7 on a G5 powermac.

Our recommendation - use Logic 6.4 - which we ended up doing after 6 hours of hell and lost takes. Definately don't use Logic 7 if you have a paying customer sat next to you - it will cost you more than you paid for the software.

When will Apple sort out some bug fixes?

I love my 1.8dual G5 and Logic Pro 7.0 Rocks for me dude!

Also mine is Rock solid !! on a Dual 2 Ghz G5 with hammerfall .
Also on my G4 1,33mohz PB with Maudio Ozone everything rock solid !

keeemo, what latency do you get when playing audio instruments / soft synths on your 1.33Ghz pb. What is the specs of your pb and how many tracks of audio instruments and effects can you playback ?

I'm thinking of a pb and some audio interface, i'm working soft all the way and i want to record, occassionaly some vocals or an external instrument (one at a time), i'll be using up to 24-30 tracks, mixed audio instruments / effects but no one can tell me about latency and number of tracks. Your Maudio Ozone seems to do the job, i have an rme multiface but if i go the 12" pb way im gonna have to replace it.

Interestingly - I keep all of my Audio on external firewire drives. Never had a problem with this before Logic 7 - could it be something else?

You guys without problems - what are you doing with it.

Stuff where I don't do a lot of Audio seems to be okay.

I'm recording up to 30 tracks of Audio - plus maybe 10 audio instruments and 20 plugins. All stuff Logic has handled no problem up to this latest "upgrade".

This was me first impression as well, i specially have crashes when i horizontally scroll the project mixer whilst playing.
somethimes out of the bleu the software quits.
i have all the latest updates 10 .3 .7, firmware updater and so on...
bought my power mac G5 is (dual 1.8, 1 gig memory) september this year.
this is so typically the digital/software industry.
i'm not happy, shame on Apple !!!


they should provide us a a MAJOR bug fix asap!
Mr Aplle, please don't come up with an update to be paid for next year!!!! let us work properly with free updates first.

Sorry to hear about your troubles. Maybe I can help. What version OS X and Logic 7 you have ? I am running 7 with 10.3.7. Have been running 7 for nearly 3 months now so maybe I can assist. (Upgraded from 2.5-3-4-5-6-7 etc...)

I have experienced problems switching sessions from 24/48 to 24/96 as the program doesn't allow for an import and convert like ProTools does. Long winded but works. The only major problem was bringing GarageBand songs in with retimed loops and then switching the bit rates.... had to convert the loops into real audio 1st.

I am also running it at home on a G4 1.2Ghz single chip Mac too with no problems. My "nemesis" is Cubase SX, crashes all the time!

As for "shame on Apple" most of the "bugs" were from Emagic. They spent too long making in-depth extended menu abilities instead of fixing blatant surface mistakes... The next version from Apple may help alleviate these too.


I have one last question, what program on a Mac do you usually use to do music?

I'm running 7 on 10.3.7 at the moment

I don't import anything - I record it all from new (new bands - new songs)

The only music software (in fact the only software) I use on Mac is Logic.

I have used Cubase on a PC and Pro Tools - but I find Logic much easier to use and you get a much better sound out of it to my ears.

I can't afford to have these problems occuring in a commercial studio with customers sat next to me - so I'm going back to 6.4 until the bugs are fixed.

Maybe you are right. It is just a poor reflection on Apple that the first release they do of Logic under their own name is so awful.

I suggest you update to OSX 10.3.7, I was experiencing random crashes due to firewire drive issues, seems to sorted out with the update.

Also it's a little early to go exclusively with Logic7, it's been fairly solid for me, but I'm not giving up Logic6 just yet.
